Effects of Salinity on Growth, Water Relations and Ion Accumulation of the Subtropical Perennial Halophyte, Atriplex griffithii var. stocksii

چکیده
The effects of salinity on growth, water relations, glycinebetaine content, and ion accumulation in the perennial halophyte Atriplex griffithii var. stocksii were determined. The following questions were addressed: (1) What effect does salinity have on growth responses at different ages? (2) Is A. griffithii an ion accumulator? (3) Does A. griffithii accumulate glycinebetaine in response to salinity? Atriplex griffithii plants were grown in pots at 0, 90, 180 and 360 m NaCl in sand culture in a plant growth chamber and plants were harvested after 30, 60 and 90 d. Plant total dry weight was significantly inhibited at 360 m NaCl. Root growth showed a substantial promotion at 90 m NaCl. The water potential and osmotic potential of shoots became more negative with increasing salinity and time of growth. The Na+ and Cl− content in both shoots and roots increased with increases in salinity. Increased treatment levels of NaCl induced decreases in Ca+, K+ and Mg#+ in plants. Atriplex griffithii accumulated a large quantity of ions, with the ash content reaching 39% of the dry weight in leaves. Inorganic ion accumulation is significant in osmotic adjustment and facilitates water uptake along a soil-plant gradient. Glycinebetaine concentration was low in roots, and in stems it increased with increases in salinity. Total amounts of glycinebetaine in leaves increased with increases in salinity, and its concentration increased substantially at 360 m NaCl. # 2000 Annals of Botany Company

Effects of salinity and ascorbic acid on growth, water status and antioxidant system in a perennial halophyte
Salinity causes oxidative stress in plants by enhancing production of reactive oxygen species, so that an efficient antioxidant system, of which ascorbic acid (AsA) is a key component, is an essential requirement of tolerance. However, antioxidant responses of plants to salinity vary considerably among species. Limonium stocksii is a sub-tropical halophyte found in the coastal marshes from Guja...

The effect of salt stress on the growth and ion accumulation in Seidlitzia rosmarinuswas determined by growing plants in soils receiving different percentages of a composed salt. Saltwort (S. rosmarinus) plantswere grown under controlled greenhouse conditions. Growth parameters were progressively declined by increasing soil salinity percentage. Saltwort, a perennial halophyte, exhibits signific...
متن کاملPlant responses to heterogeneous salinity: growth of the halophyte Atriplex nummularia is determined by the root-weighted mean salinity of the root zone
Soil salinity is generally spatially heterogeneous, but our understanding of halophyte physiology under such conditions is limited. The growth and physiology of the dicotyledonous halophyte Atriplex nummularia was evaluated in split-root experiments to test whether growth is determined by: (i) the lowest; (ii) the highest; or (iii) the mean salinity of the root zone. In two experiments, plants ...
متن کاملAn inland and a coastal population of the Mediterranean xero-halophyte species Atriplex halimus L. differ in their ability to accumulate proline and glycinebetaine in response to salinity and water stress.
Soil salinity and drought compromise water uptake and lead to osmotic adjustment in xero-halophyte plant species. These important environmental constraints may also have specific effects on plant physiology. Stress-induced accumulation of osmocompatible solutes was analysed in two Tunisian populations of the Mediteranean shrub Atriplex halimus L.-plants originating from a salt-affected coastal ...
متن کاملIncreasing salt tolerance in Olive, Olea europaea L. plants by supplemental potassium nutrition involves changes in ion accumulation and anatomical attributes
The effects of supplemental potassium were studied on growth, ion concentration and anatomical parameters in one year old olive trees, Olea europaea L., grown in sand culture in greenhouse at different levels of NaCl for 80 days. The experiments were conducted in a completely randomized design as a factorial. Factor one was salinity (0, 40 or 80 mM NaCl) and the second factor was potassium leve...
